Southwest Airlines flight skids off runway at Burbank airport
BURBANK, Calif. (FOX 11) - A Southwest Airlines flight skidded off the runway Thursday morning at the Hollywood Burbank Airport, setting off a domino effect of flight delays and cancellations.
Southwest Flight 278, which departed from Oakland, rolled off the end of runway eight shortly after 9 a.m., the FAA said in a statement.
No injuries were reported among the 112 passengers and five crew members on board, the airline said.
The Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) was used to stop the plane, the FAA said. EMAS is designed to safely stop planes that overshoot runways, according to the FAA's website.
It was unknown if rain was a factor in the incident.
Southwest Airlines canceled all flights from Hollywood Burbank Airport through 3 p.m. Customers were urged to check their flight status at www.southwest.com.
Passenger Moe Storch tweeted the Southwest plane from Oakland to Burbank appeared to hydroplane after it landed on the wet runway.
The pilot "regained control and hit brakes hit, reverse thrust, just in time."
Another photo shows passengers deplaning by stairs.
