Three-vehicle crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike leaves one man dead
BRECKNOCK, Pa. (WTXF) - One man is dead in a three-vehicle crash on Pennsylvania Turnpike westbound early Thursday morning.
Police say the accident took place around 2:20 a.m. when a Hyundai Sonata overturned in a single vehicle crash in the left lane of I-76 westbound at mile post 292.4 in Brecknock. Three occupants of the vehicle exited when a second car stopped to assist them.
As they were on the road, a UPS commercial tractor-trailer struck the two vehicles and a 25-year-old man who had exited from the overturned passenger vehicle. That man has died and the other two individuals from the overturned vehicle fled the scene. Police say three other people suffered minor injuries from the crash.
The tractor trailer struck the flipped car in the left lane of the highway between the Morgantown and Reading interchanges.
Officials say one car is off the roadway, while the other and the truck are still on the shoulder.
Pennsylvania State Police say they expect the road to be closed until 8:00 a.m. all vehicles driving in that direction will be forced off the road at the Morgantown exit.
Drivers are advised to take an alternate route.
