Water main break causes street to cave in, swallow 2 cars
KENSINGTON (WTXF) - A major water main break in Kensington caused part of a street to collapse, swallowing up two cars.
It happened in the 2300 block of E. Boston Street.
At least 20 homes are without power Sunday night, and several more with no heat. PGW responded to the scene, making repairs.
The Philadelphia Water Department told FOX 29 News repairs to the water line, gas, and street will continue until the situation is resolved and they don't know when that will be.
According to PGW officials, a sewer line likely eroded over time and sprung a leak which shifted the ground, causing the water main to break.
The erosion under the street left gaping holes. One neighbor says he woke up to water in his basement.
The city will begin replacing the water main break Sunday, but there is no word on how long the street will be closed.
