Wildwood boardwalk adding new security upgrades ahead of summer

Wildwood officials are taking action to keep residents and visitors safe as they enjoy the boardwalk this summer.

What we know:

Major security upgrades were announced this week by Wildwood Deputy Mayor Steve Mikulski, with Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. and Commissioner Krista McConnell.

New lighting has already been installed along the entire boardwalk from 26th Street to Burke Avenue, along with "strategically positioned" security cameras.

Bollards, which are posts used to prevent vehicle access, will also be installed at several locations.

Officials say most of the bollards should be in place before the summer season begins, which is just 4 months away!

The backstory:

The new security initiative comes after the Jersey Shore experienced a summer full of chaos last year.

Wildwood declared a state of emergency over Memorial Day weekend after the police department became overwhelmed with calls about large crowds of adults and juveniles.

In Ocean City, a teen was stabbed after a large crowd of teenagers caused more mayhem.

What they're saying:

"While we acknowledge that vulnerabilities cannot be completely eliminated, these targeted enhancements are designed to significantly deter potential threats and mitigate the impact of any incidents," Deputy Mayor Steve Mikulski said.
