Woman rescued from house fire in Hunting Park
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) A woman was rescued from a house fire on Marvine Street in Hunting Park.
"All of a sudden they bring her body out. Everybody was screaming and hollering. I lost it a bit. I went and said a prayer though," said Lawrence Burgess.
He recorded video with his cell phone of firefighters and EMS workers bringing a young woman out of her burning home on Marvine Street in Hunting Park.
"They gave her CPR for a while and then they put a ventilator on to see if she could breathe on her own," he said. He stopped recording at that point, nervous about whether the woman was ok. The video also shows firefighters are on the second floor roof as smoke pours out of the windows. Burgess says flames shot from the back.
"The whole back was on fire like if the fire started in kitchen somewhere," he said.
Firefighters got the call around 6 o'clock Tuesday evening. They say the woman who is believed to be in her 20's was suffering from smoke inhalation. She was taken to Temple Hospital says Philadelphia's new Fire Commissioner. It's his second day on the job and his first fire response.
"Right now the occupant is breathing on her own and is expected to survive. So it looks like this is a good news story and is appropriate for EMS week," said Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel.
Officials say the young woman was reunited with her family at the hospital and everyone who lives in the home is accounted for. Burgess who is also the block captain is relieved to hear the news.
"I had to say a prayer because I saw them bring her body out when we didn't think nobody was in there," he said.
