Floodwaters receded in shore towns along the New Jersey coast on Friday as beachgoers were forced to work around the aftermath left behind by Hurricane Erin.

Shore towns in New Jersey and Delaware are bracing for the worst of Hurricane Erin as the sprawling storm continues traveling up the East Coast on Thursday.

The setup will also translate into no hurricane concerns for the continental United States for the foreseeable future, as developing cyclones will turn away from North America into the open Atlantic.

Hurricane Erin’s core missed the U.S., but the cyclone led to flooded roadways and eroded dunes. Coastal flooding was reported in North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York.

Rescue teams in Margate City were busy Thursday night responding to six vehicle rescues from flooded waters, saving a total of 16 people and three dogs. They also dealt with a gas leak, an underground transformer fire and an electrical fire at a business.

Those traveling down the shore today and this weekend are still advised to be mindful of powerful rip currents and safety warnings despite the weather appearing to be calmer Friday. Stay out of the water until it is fully safe.

The new protections come after the devastating July Fourth floods in the Texas Hill Country that claimed the lives of dozens of young campers.

Ocean City and Atlantic City are allowing people to park in lots and garages for free as the beach towns brace for the Category 2 storm.

Thousands of people were evacuated off parts of North Carolina's Outer Banks amid the threat of a storm surge. Meanwhile, beaches remained off limits along the East Coast as dangerous waves and rip currents slammed shorelines.

With the impact Hurricane Erin has on the Jersey Shore to worsen Thursday, many surfers seized the waves as an opportunity.
