Cold, high winds continue after snow

(WTXF/AP) - The snow has stopped falling around the Philadelphia region in what was an underperforming storm for many, including the city.

The snow making its way out to sea did leave several inches behind in some areas.

Temperatures fell early Thursday morning turning rain into sleet, and then into snow. The wet start caused some issues on the road ways leaving a layer of ice underneath a layer of wet packing snow.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 4pm for most of our area, but any leftover snowfall will end much sooner in most of the area.

Philadelphia, which declared a snow emergency, lifted it at about noon,

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May counties in New Jersey until 4pm.

Allentown was first with heavy snow. Then, to the west, Chester County started switching over from rain at about 4am. Philadelphia made the transition at about 6am to sleet and then snow.

We did indeed get less snow than originally thought thanks to the delayed turnover from the rain. The storm's track also sped up, which sent it out of the area sooner than expected..

The heaviest snow fell during rush hour, 5-9 a.m.

The Poconos got the most snow since the changeover started early, with some areas getting 8 or more inches of snow.

In the Lehigh Valley, about 5 inches of snow covered the area.

Philadelphia got about 3 inches. In the immediate surrounding counties, snow totals came in around anywhere from 2-5 inches, including 5 inches in some areas of Bucks county.

Wilmington saw more rain, and only accumulated about an inch of snow, as did several areas down the shore.

Besides the snow, expect the wind to blow the snow and make it feel colder. There will be a Wind Advisory in effect from noon to 6pm for Philadelphia, Delaware County, Burlington County, and everywhere south of those places in our viewing area.

Expect gusts at least the mid-20s miles an hour. It could be worse. Long Island is expecting a blizzard.

For us, Friday will be cold, too. Don't expect the snow to melt until the weekend when temperatures should reach the mid-40s.
