5-year-old Chester boy struck stray bullet during drive-by shooting
CHESTER (WTXF) - A five year old Chester boy is home from the hospital, after taking an errant bullet from a drive-by shooter...
And he's telling his story, exclusively, to FOX 29.
The story touched a lot of hearts in our region...
A family preparing for a late night meal in their own kitchen, when a bullet shattered the window and changed a little boy's life.
Latosha Hayes told FOX 29's Bruce Gordon that she couldn't wait till he met, face-to-face, with her son: the little boy she calls Boo Boo.
Marc Andrews Jr. is just five years old.
But his courage in the face of frightening violence, makes him-- sadly-- old beyond his years.
With mom by his side, little Marc Andrews Jr. described his brush with death late Monday night...
"I heard a crack in the door window. My mom pulled me down but I got shot too late."
A drive-by shooter or shooters sprayed the apartments on the 400 block of Whittington with more than two dozen bullets.
An errant shot shattered the rear window of Marc's family's apartment.
Mom and dad used their bodies to shield Marc and his 4 year old sister.
The shooting stopped and they arose from the floor...
"When my mom turned me around, there was a big hole in my back - right here."
"When you saw the look on your mommy's face, I'll bet she was pretty scared..." FOX 29's Bruce Gordon asked Marc.
"She was crying...and all the rest of the family," Marc replied.
"How about you?"
"Yes, I was in pain."
"I'll bet that hurt a lot, huh?"
"Yes."
Marc was rushed by ambulance to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where mom stayed with her son through a tense night.
"She never slept, she never ate, she was taking care of me. Getting shot is more important than family," Marc said.
Now he's out of the hospital, but carries with him a grim souvenir...
"Is that bullet still inside you?" Bruce Gordon asked.
"In my underarm, yes."
"It's in your underarm. What do you think about that?"
"It hurts when I try and lift it up."
Chester Police have been very visible on the 400 block of Whittington, since the shooting.
Marc and his family are staying with relatives.
"I don't wanna go back to that house. No, no, no!" Marc said.
As for the gunman-- and his gun?
Listen to the words of this five year old victim:
"Me and mom talked to God about no guns being invented no more," Marc said.
"You wish that guns hadn't been invented," Bruce Gordon replied.
"Nope! I just want them to be locked up."
"Whoever did this to you?"
"Yes."
Marc has a suggested sentence for the shooter, once he's been caught and convicted: ten thousand years.
Once the swelling goes down Marc will be back in the hospital to have the bullet removed - hopefully in time for his 6th birthday, next month.
