Bridgegate jury deliberating again after questioning judge

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Jurors in the George Washington Bridge lane-closing trial resumed deliberations, Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, their first full day of deliberations, the panel appeared to be wrestling with the law surrounding the top two counts in the indictment.

Two former allies of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are charged with scheming to punish a mayor who didn't endorse Christie in 2013.

Jurors asked the judge if they could convict the defendants of causing the traffic jams if they acquitted them of the conspiracy count. They also asked about what role the motive of the alleged scheme should play.

Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni are charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, civil rights violations and misusing the bridge to retaliate against a mayor who didn't endorse Christie. The most serious charge carries a 20-year maximum prison sentence.

The two testified they thought the closure of access lanes was part of a traffic study.

Deliberations began Monday afternoon.
