Car reported stolen with baby inside crashes in NJ; man arrested
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Officials say a man was arrested after the crash of a car reported stolen with a baby inside in New Jersey.
Jersey City officials say a woman left her baby in a car Saturday afternoon and asked a man known to her to watch the vehicle.
City spokeswoman Kim Wallace-Scalcione says the man then got in the car and drove off, and the woman immediately called police.
Officers located the car and a brief car chase ensued, but the pursuit was called off once police learned a baby was in the vehicle.
The car shortly afterward was involved in a crash with multiple vehicles with only minor injuries reported. The baby was unharmed.
Wallace-Scalcione says the driver was arrested and faces charges of theft and kidnapping, with other counts pending.
