Water main break in Upper Chichester Twp. prompts boil water advisory, school closings

A major water main break in Delaware County has led to a boil water advisory and water outages affecting several communities, with school closures and ongoing repair efforts.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, water pressure is expected to be back to normal in homes, CWA announced.

What we don't know:

According to the CWA, the main was broken near a PennDOT construction zone along Route 322 in Upper Chichester, but officials are still investigating exactly what caused the water main to break.

Boil Water Advisory

Even though the break has been fixed, and water pressure has been restored, a Boil Water Advisory was in effect for residents in Upper Chichester, Lower Chichester, Marcus Hook, Twin Oaks and Maher Boulevard and William Road in Bethel Township.

Officials are still doing tests on water samples from the main. So far, the CWA has completed one of two required tests.

Chester Water Authority sent the following update Monday:

"As of Monday, March 30, Chester Water Authority is announcing that the boil water advisory for customers affected by the water main break in Upper Chichester Township has been lifted. Customers were notified on March 26, 2026 of the loss of positive water pressure, resulting in the issuance of the boil water advisory. We are pleased to report that the issue has been resolved, and it is no longer necessary to boil your water. We thank you for your patience. For the full drinking water problem corrected notice please refer to our website at www.chesterwater.com"

What you can do:

In the case of a boil water advisory, customers should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, food preparation, and infant care, and avoid consuming tap water without boiling.

The authority recommends bringing water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or food preparation.
