Delaware man takes unique approach for kidney donation

Wilmington, Del. (WTXF) A Delaware man is in the fight of his life. He's taking a unique approach to continue living.

46-year-old Dave Amalfitano, dad of 14-year-old Anna and 12-year-old twin sons, knew he had to do something to save his life.

"Two Sundays ago, I went to my union hall and me and my sons Leo and Matthew put on a Billboard for a kidney," Dave told FOX 29.

That's right IBEW Local 313 electrician is hoping someone driving along Route 202 in New Castle, Delaware, will see this billboard and his desperate plea for a kidney.

"When he approached us, there wasn't a second thought. Anything we can do to help you, and hopefully it works," said IBEW local president Dave Hollen.

Dave has a hereditary condition called polycystic kidney disease or PKD.

"Clusters of cysts grow, constantly grow on my kidneys and just wipe them out puts me in renal failure," he explained.

Dave recently took a turn for the worst after developing an infection that landed him in the hospital.

"It's been hard seeing him sick, like that cause there's nothing you can do," his daughter said.

The single father knows he could wait four to five years for a kidney and his children were his inspiration to try something a little crazy to find a donor like this unique appeal .

According to Dave, he knows what he's asking is a big deal, but is overwhelmed with the response already.
