Firefighter Catches Baby Dropped by Burning Apartment
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - A woman and her infant son are alive because of the quick work by an off-duty Chattanooga firefighter after a fire tore through his apartment complex.
The fire broke out at the Hidden Creek Apartments in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and quickly spread to two dozen units--forcing residents to run to safety.
The first fire units arrived moments later, because their station is just a block away. Inside one of the apartments was off-duty firefighter Lt.Vernon Lane who lives in the complex. The firefighter's quick-thinking saved a young mother and her 10-month-old boy. +
"As I proceeded to the building, the baby got released from the top of the building and I dove into the bushes to grab the baby," Lt. Lane explained.
A damage estimate has not been released nor the condition and names of the woman and the baby. The local chapter of the American Red Cross set up a shelter at the East Brainerd Church of Christ for those who were displaced by the fire.
