Medical Examiner: Orlando terrorist's body kept away from 49 'beautiful' victims

(FOX NEWS)- A Florida county medical examiner's report said that the body of Orlando terrorist shooter Omar Mateen was autopsied and stored separately from the 49 people he massacred on Sunday.

The report from Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Stephany via the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office said:

"The Pulse shooter was transported separately from the scene. His remains are being held in a separate building at the ME facility. The shooter's autopsy was also conducted in another building, away from the victims. This is not a law or requirement, but was rather done out of respect for the victims and their families so that the shooter may never be near the 49 beautiful souls again."

The report also mentioned two other tragedies that struck the community in the past week: the murder of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie at Orlando's Plaza Live, and the suspected drowning of 2-year-old Lane Graves by an alligator at Disney's Seven Seas Lagoon.

"This has been the most difficult week for our community. I'd like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of singer Christina Grimmie, the Pulse nightclub shooting victims and 2-year-old Lane Graves," the statement said.

Stephany said the medical examiner's office has a duty not just to law enforcement, but to the families who lost loved ones.
