NBA National Anthem singer kneels in protest during performance

A woman chosen to sing the national anthem at an NBA game in Miami yesterday took a knee as she gave her performance, Abby Huntsman reported on Fox & Friends.

Denasia Lawrence, described by a source to the Sun-Sentinel as a part-time Miami Heat operations employee, knelt as she performed the Star-Spangled Banner at American Airlines Arena, where the Heat were hosting the Philadelphia 76ers.

Lawrence posted on her Facebook page about the incident, saying she wanted to recognize the "war on black and brown bodies", adding that minorities are being "unjustly killed and overly criminalized."

"I took the opportunity to sing AND kneel; to show that we belong in this country AND that we have the right to respectfully protest injustices against us," she wrote, "I took the opportunity to sing AND kneel to show that, I too, am America."
