Outpouring of support for injured Bensalem firefighter

BENSALEM (WTXF) - A Bensalem firefighter is making progress after falling off his ladder nearly three weeks ago responding to a house fire.

It was a long fall that left the firefighter badly injured.

Now the community is turning out to show support for the hero.

Hundreds of get well soon cards from local school children - letters and phone calls from people from as far away as Hawaii - wishing Nick Weaver well - 2 and a half weeks after the Bensalem Township firefighter was seriously injured while doing a shift as a volunteer with Nottingham Fire Dept.

"He was on a ladder and his foot just slipped."

Bensalem Battalion Chief Robert Sponheimer was also on the call and says Weaver fell 35 feet to the ground. The Bucks County native suffered multiple fractures in his back and had a hemorrhage behind his eye. But - he's home from the hospital -- showing signs of improvement.

"He exceeded everyone's expectations getting up walking doing what's he's supposed to do he's a fighter and he's going to keep fighting."

Sponheimer says despite progress, Weaver wasn't feeling up to an on camera interview with FOX 29. It could be a few months before the career firefighter returns to work with the Bensalem department.

To rally his spirits and boost his finances until workman's comp kicks in, his fellow firefighters set up a GoFundMe page. Weaver is receiving major support from the community he serves.

"It's brought the community together it really has a lot of people have supported him and it's truly amazing."

Sponheimer says each and every donation and get well soon card is helping Nick get back on his feet -- physically, mentally and emotionally.
