Volunteers help migrating American toads after burglary
PHILADELPHIA (FOX 29) - A broken door on the storage shed was like a kick in the gut to volunteers at the Schuylkill Center in Roxborough. Stolen from the non-profit, dozens of flashlights and safety vests--less than $1,000-- but basically everything a group uses to save toads.
Undeterred from the burglary Girl Scouts from Troop 974 came to rescue the toads armed with their own flashlight in hand.
"The American toads are very important to the ecosystem. They eat mosquitos," Claire Morgan said.
'Toad Detour' was set up 11 years ago to help American toads migrate across the road to the Upper Roxborough Reservoir.
Traffic and toads don't mix. When you are that small fighting traffic many times is a losing battle. The city allows roads to be closed and that's where the volunteers come in. They help the tiny toads cross the road to make more tiny toads for generations to come.
On Monday, volunteers used their own safety gear while new items are ordered. In the meantime, the fight to save those toads will continue.
