Driver charged in deadly accident involving off-duty Philadelphia Police officer

An off-duty Philadelphia Police officer was fatally struck by another vehicle while riding his motorcycle Sunday afternoon. The officer has been identified as Lamar Poole, 42.

The incident occurred at the on Roosevelt Boulevard, around 4:10 p.m. in the city's Oxford Circle neighborhood.

Authorities say the off-duty officer was traveling northbound on Devereaux Road and was struck by a vehicle traveling the opposite direction as they both crossed the Boulevard.

The officer was transported to Aria-Torresdale Hospital in critical condition, and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police say Louis John Vogwill, 59, is the driver of the striking vehicle. He fled the scene, and was later found at Devereaux Avenue and Bustleton Avenue where he was later taken into custody.

Police say witnesses played a key role in helping them track down the driver, including a tow truck driver who followed the man and blocked him in several blocks away.

Investigators say they suspect the driver may have been driving under the influence. Vogwill is charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Homicide by Vehicle, Homicide by Vehicle-DUI, Dui- Alcohol or Drugs, and related offenses.

Officer Poole worked in the 12th District, and he was a 19 year veteran of the force.
