Man killed in deadly Rhawnhurst hit-and-run

PHILADELPHIA (FOX 29) - Police are looking for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run in Philadelphia's Rhawnhurst neighborhood.

It happened last Saturday night along the 8100 block of Bustleton Avenue.

"To me it was always very important that my daughter sees her father in a positive light that he's a part of her life." They had planned to go ice skating at City Hall last Sunday, Mandi Hurvitz, her former husband Bile Correa and their 6-year-old daughter.

"She adored him. She adored him and he adored her."

But Correa never made it. Late Saturday night, he was mowed down while crossing Bustleton Avenue after leaving a nearby restaurant.

Accident investigators say a white Honda Pilot struck Correa and knocked him to the street. Seconds later, a vehicle believed to be a dark-colored Toyota Forerunner drove over the helpless pedestrian.

Both drivers left the scene. Mandi Hurvitz was called upon to identify Correa's body.

"I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe that this is the way that someone can lose their life," she said.

Hurvitz says she met the Brazilian immigrant on Match,com back in 2008. She says they separated a coupe of years ago, but says he stayed a part of his daughter's life- both financially and emotionally.

"He was very thoughtful, very caring, very generous . A a hard worker," Hurvitz said.

Police say the driver of that first vehicle later came forward and charges are pending. But that second driver--the one behind the wheel of the Toyota--is still out there.

"I have to tell my 6-year-old daughter that her daddy's not here anymore and right before Christmas," Hurvitz said.
