Off-duty officer accused of hitting cars while driving drunk

Police say an off-duty officer struck several parked cars while driving drunk in North Philadelphia.

"It was like two across the street and I'm thinking it was one right there. I'm not too sure if that one got hit and my neighbors car was right there that one got hit, too," Eric Waites said.

It happened at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

"He was in fact on off-duty status. He was operating his private vehicle and struck four cars in that area," Philadelphia Police Captain Sekou Kinebrew said.

According to neighbors, the driver stumbled out of the jeep and assured them everything's OK because he's a cop.

"He did submit to the breathalyzer and his blood alcohol content according the the breathalyzer was point .198," Captain Kinebrew said. "He's over twice the legal limit"

Captain Kinebrew says the 40-year-old 22nd District officer has been on the Philadelphia police force four years.

Given the apparent force that the cars were hit the time of day likely made the difference why no one was hurt.

The officer is currently on desk duty.
