Plaques stolen from iconic statues outside Citizen's Bank Park
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - It's a big weekend for our Phillies and fans are pouring to the ballpark for Alumni Weekend weekend festivities, but there's something missing. Someone stole the plaques right off the iconic statues in front of Citizen's Bank Park.
On a hot August night when Phillies faithful flock to Citizens Bank Park they pass by the usual icons of Philadelphia Sports History only this time they see something different and foul. History has been robbed.
Rachel Boatwright was shocked to see that would pry off two of three plaques on a baseball statue known as 'The Play At Second Base'--a fixture in the South Philly sports complex for decades.
Right down Pattison Avenue there's more interference. Two of three plaques stolen from a statue called 'The Tackle', which honors the old Philadelphia/ Baltimore Stars of the former United States Football League.
And they got another one. At least one plaque and another piece missing from this statue known as 'Punter.' All of them sculpted by Philly artist Joe Brown once decorated the Vet from the mid-70s right up through when it was imploded.
Police say the total estimated value of the plaques is $7,500.
"It's not even the money. I don't think it's the money. It's the thought of it and what it represents," one fan said.
Fans FOX 29 spoke with all agree the love of Philly's rich sports history will not be shaken by any thief's unsportsmanlike conduct.
