Woman receives messages of support after posting account of horrific gang rape on Facebook

(WTXF/STORYFUL) -- An Indian woman has gained the support of thousands after sharing the horrific story of how she was gang raped in Chicago 20 years ago.

Celebrity hair stylist Sapna Bhavnani shared the story on July 8 on Humans of Bombay, a spin-off of the Facebook page Humans of New York.

In the post she talks about the day of the rape, including being met with a group of men outside a bar in Chicago on Christmas Eve, being threatened with a gun, and then being forced to perform oral sex on the men.

Then they gang raped her.

Bhavnani first spoke in public about the rape in 2014.

She has maintained that the harrowing crime didn't break her spirit.

"I remember walking home, showering and pushing this incident to the back of my mind for years and never letting it break my spirit - I still wear short dresses and the brightest red on my lips," she said.

Since Bhavnani posted her account, support has flooded in for her on both Facebook and Twitter for her bravery and spirit.
