The storms killed more than two dozen people and left hundreds of people homeless.

The father shielded his two children, one of which was one-week-old, as the tornado hit their Winona, Mississippi, home. The father says that this home has been within their family for four decades.

Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the U.S., and the majority-Black Delta where the massive tornado struck has long been one of the poorest parts of the state.

“They said you need to take cover, but it happened so fast a lot of people didn’t even get a chance to take cover."

Dozens more are injured and at least four people are missing, Mississippi officials said.

Authorities warned the danger of additional slides is far from over in northern Utah.
